Chapter 54

Main Hall - Darwesh

Darwesh entered the main hall. His sons were already there.

Karim. Rashid.

And his grandson... Tariq.

All three armed. All three alert. All three waiting for his orders.

Rashid stood closest to his father.

The eldest.

Karim. The practical one. Spoke first. "Abba, Yousaf said Zahoor Mehsud is coming. Is this about the funeral? About what Rashid said?"

Rashid's jaw tightened.

"Maybe." Darwesh's voice cut through. "We will know soon."

Karim and Rashid had understood... fifteen vehicles. Armed men. All of them carrying. That's not a conversation. That's a statement.

Tariq was quiet. Standing slightly apart. Behind his father and uncle. His face pale. His hands shaking slightly.

Darwesh noticed. "Tariq. Are you alright?"

"Yes, Dadu jaan. Just... just surprised. I didn't expect..."

"None of us expected this." Darwesh studied his grandson. The boy looked terrified. More than just surprised. Actually afraid.

Why?

But there was no time to ask.

Outside, the sound of engines grew louder. Closer.

"Positions," Darwesh ordered. "Karim, take twenty men to the east wall. Rashid, twenty men to the west. I'll hold the center with the rest. Tariq, you stay with me."

"Abba..." Karim started.

"Do it. Now."

His sons moved. Karim and Rashid heading to their positions. Shouting orders. Organizing men.

Tariq stayed. Rooted in place. His face white.

Darwesh looked at him. Really looked at him.

The boy was shaking. Not with cold. With fear.

"Tariq." Darwesh's voice was gentler now. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing, Dadu jaan. I'm just..."

"Don't lie to me." Darwesh stepped closer. "What do you know about this? Why is Zahoor coming here?"

Tariq's eyes went wide. "I don't know. I don't know anything. I..."

"TARIQ." Darwesh grabbed his grandson's shoulders. Not rough. But firm. "If you know something. Anything. Tell me now. Before they arrive. Before this becomes something we can't control."

Tariq opened his mouth. Closed it. Looked toward the door. Toward the sound of approaching engines.

"I... I don't..." His voice was barely a whisper.

The engines were very close now. The headlights visible through the windows. Blazing. Angry.

Darwesh released Tariq. There was no time.

Whatever Tariq knew... whatever was making him shake... it would have to wait.

"Get behind me," Darwesh ordered. "Stay out of sight. If shooting starts, you run. Understood?"

Tariq nodded. Mute. Terrified.

Darwesh walked toward the main entrance. His men were already there. Thirty of them. Armed. Positioned behind walls. Behind pillars. Behind cover.

Ready.

Yousaf appeared at his side. "The rest are five minutes out. Maybe ten."

"We don't have ten minutes." Darwesh looked through the window. At the convoy now pulling up to the compound gates. Fifteen vehicles. Headlights blazing. Engines idling.

Armed men visible in every window.

The Mehsud army. Come calling.

Darwesh's finger rested on the trigger guard. Not the trigger itself. Not yet. But close.

"Open the gates," Darwesh ordered.

"Maalik?" Yousaf looked at him. Surprised.

"Open them. Let them in. Let's see what Zahoor wants."

"But if they..."

"OPEN THE GATES." Darwesh's voice was iron. "If they wanted to attack, they'd have attacked already. This is a confrontation. Not an assault. So we confront."

Yousaf hesitated. Then nodded. Gave the order.

The compound gates swung open. Slow. Heavy. Ancient metal creaking.

The Mehsud convoy entered. Slow. Deliberate. Fifteen vehicles rolling through. Stopping in the center courtyard.
